Noted recall: The goal is to describe, in just a few words, what the article is about. Additionally, if I think the article is particularly note-worthy (good or bad), I will comment on that. Compare this to a small sticky note, something to jog your memory about the contents of an article. Of course, if I miss the point of an article, or fail to find anything remarkable, that is entirely the fault of the reviewer.

Banking on the Cold War - Nikhil Pal Singh
(read 2019/02/24)
Some background on the cold war. Specific focus on Forrestal and his influence in shaping US policy, and a permanent war economy. Policy was a focus on active prevention through counter-measures and military bases around the world; this more or less continues to the present day. This is a short article, but (I think) provides good context.

What White Supremacists Know - Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz
(read 2019/02/24)
Some history of genocide in the United States. Discusses action against Native Americans since before the country was founded.

The Sources of U.S. Conduct - Stuart Schrader
(read 2019/02/24)
This is an interesting article. Discusses the start of the cold war, and general anti-communist sentiment in the US. This is tied to change in police structure, where police forces were given more funding and training, but were also given more autonomy. The article ties in institutionalized racism, and the prison-industrial complex.

Puerto Rico's War on Its Poor - Marisol LeBrón
(read 2019/02/25)
Short but concise article on Puerto Rico in the early 1990's, and the experiment in militarized policing (the national guard) and its connection with privatization of government housing.

Intellectuals Against Noticing - Jeanne Morefield
(read 2019/02/25)
Article about foreign policy commentary living in denial; not acknowledging US imperialism and racism.

Quantifying Love - Frank Pasquale
(read 2019/02/25)
Short article on China's Social Credit System. Raises questions about how different data can be quantized or some possible challenges with that. He raises the point that there is already a large amount of this that exists to a degree, such as unpaid volunteer reviewers online, or active members of internet communities -- individuals that have some high amount of reputation.
